Plastics are easy to transport and use due to their structural characteristics. Today, plastics can be found in many aspects of our lives, ranging from food packaging to the ingredients of cosmetics. While completely eliminating plastics from our lives may seem unlikely, we can take more measures regarding single-use plastics.
Single-use plastics end up in the oceans through factors such as wind, rivers, and sewers. Once in the ocean, plastics undergo a process of fragmentation, breaking down into smaller plastic pieces over time, but they do not disappear. From the smallest marine organisms like plankton to whales, many marine creatures mistake plastics for food and consume them. Plastic, which becomes part of the marine food chain, not only pollutes the oceans but also endangers the survival of numerous marine species.
